"The tiny bird and his shadow sit on my fence top.
He has his back to me, but I can see his little body moving.
And though I can't hear it through my double glazed windows,
I can tell that he is singing. . ."

This week the sun shone, and it seemed that summer had settled into her stride. I sat in the garden, listening to the birdsong and the soft hum of insects going about their day. I watched the air full of little tiny insect bodies going about their life and was struck by the realisation that we were co-existing, sharing the moment on a lazy summers day in my garden. . .
"Dancing shadows play across the wall, sunlight glints on everything shiny.
There are pools of light in dark corners. Outside, white butterflies
flutter like floating flowers. Pinned like delicate brooches to the
Buddleia blooms they collect the nectar that is their life.
The thought crosses my mind, am I collecting nectar,
or am I still fluttering around the bush looking
for somewhere safe to land?"

I caught this butterfly in flight, and the shadows against Joe's workshop.

Looking at things so closely is a good thing, as long as you don't get too wrapped
up in the details and forget to look at the bigger picture. . . Because then
sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees, as the saying goes.

I walked this dappled path thinking of that. When I came across this wider view
and I realised that for balance, both perspectives are equally important.

A lovely glimpse of summer for those of us in the Southern hemisphere winter :) I love the photo of the butterfly and this impage: 'Pinned like delicate brooches'
What a lovely week you have had. The pictures are enchanting, so varied. I love the butterfly by the shed, and the close-ups of buddelia and day lily. You are absolutely right about not getting bogged down in detail and missing the wide view.
I was enraptured by this sequence - particularly the garden gate.
The quote: "All will be well, all will be well, and all manner of things will be well." - Julian of Norwich - made me sit up. Julian of Norwich is discussed by Isaac Coronel in my novel, 'Tom Fleck'; as was 'Gawain and the Green knight' on Radio 4 at 2330 last night.

Very beautiful nature pictures, it all feels warm and welcoming
Gosh I want to live inside these pictures.
The big and the small details of life to form a balance, eh? Lovely pictures of summer at its best.♥
It takes patience to photograph bees doesn't it Susannah - yours is lovely, perhaps the secret is to get them drunk on buddleia nectar! Yes that gate is very 'secret garden' - your garden gives me hope that one day ours will be beautiful too. Have a nice week, M x
There is such a sense of peace throughout your post. A deep satisfaction in simply being alive and in the present moment. Thank you. The photos are lovely, your thoughts gentle and wise, the garden gate is inviting as well as intriguing,
Elizabeth
Thanks everyone for your comments. :-)
It is such a pleasure to have you all visit and share my photo's and my week.
Great to see you all. x
Beautiful photos, Susannah. I especially like the close up of the lily and the overhead sunlight through the leaves.
Thanks Paul. :-)
Dear Susannah! Your my fav person on the web and thanks so much for sharing your lovely self through photos, thoughts, quotes etc! You are uplifting humanity through your "work" and inspiring many kindred spirits! I, for one, deeply appreciate your being a "hub" for positive energy on this planet, but I know there are many of us!! Love and Light! Mary McClain Portland, Or USA Planet Earth
Thanks very much Mary. :-) It is always good to see you. x
I absolutely love that photo of the bee. I would have been delighted if I had caught that. Your garden and your perspective are, as always, a joy!
Thanks Selma, I was really pleased to have captured that photo of the bee! But you should have seen me racing around the garden trying to get pictures of butterflies! :-)
Good to see you. x
It's so important to get in close and really look at something - to look at it from the simplest perspective. Then you really begin to discover the relationships of colour and space and movement. And that can get you thinking about about other the relationships you encounter in new ways.
An artist told me that. But I think he's on to something.
Whatever you think of that theory, it sure didn't hurt looking close at your flowers and garden (as always). :0)
Good to see you Jennifer and I agree with your artist friend, it is good advice. :-)x
